Clean Hydrogen from Seawater: Equatic’s Breakthrough

A new invention by the California-based startup Equatic offers a breakthrough in the production of hydrogen fuel by splitting seawater without generating harmful byproducts, such as toxic chlorine gas. Traditionally, turning seawater into hydrogen through electrolysis has been problematic because of corrosive salts and minerals that damage the machinery. Additionally, the process typically produces chlorine gas, which corrodes equipment and is toxic. Equatic’s innovation involves a specially designed anode that selectively splits water molecules without affecting the salt, allowing clean hydrogen production from seawater. This method eliminates the need for pure water, potentially making hydrogen fuel production more sustainable and less resource-intensive. The startup is backed by ARPA-E, and the hydrogen it produces will be sold to offset the operational costs.


This invention could be a game-changer in both hydrogen fuel production and water resource management. The ability to produce hydrogen fuel from seawater without creating harmful byproducts addresses two significant issues: the scarcity of freshwater for electrolysis and the environmental risks posed by chlorine gas.
