Set on the technologically advanced but deteriorating planet of Cybertron, the film explores themes of environmental destruction, leadership failures, and the exploitation of natural resources. Through the fate of Cybertron, the film raises urgent questions about Earth’s sustainability, leadership, and the future of our planet.

Cybertron: A Planet on the Brink

At the heart of Transformers One is the ecological collapse of Cybertron, a once-thriving world now crippled by the depletion of Energon, its primary energy source. Under the rule of Sentinel Prime, Cybertron’s resources are overexploited, with little regard for the planet’s long-term health. This mirrors the environmental degradation we see on Earth, where fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrialization have driven us to the brink of climate disaster.

Just as Energon powers Cybertron, Earth’s ecosystems rely on natural resources such as water, fossil fuels, and biodiversity. The unregulated extraction and exploitation of these resources by corporations and governments threaten the balance of our planet’s ecosystems. Though individuals contribute to environmental impacts through daily activities like transportation, energy use, and waste production, a significant portion of global emissions is driven by the wealthiest individuals and corporations. In fact, studies show that the richest 1% of the global population is responsible for more than double the emissions of the poorest 50%. This highlights the disproportionate influence of the affluent and corporate elites on environmental degradation, as they control vast amounts of resources, consume at a higher rate, and often engage in carbon-intensive lifestyles.

The concentration of emissions among the wealthy is not only a matter of individual consumption but also a systemic issue tied to the industries and corporations they lead. These corporations are responsible for a large percentage of global carbon emissions—research indicates that just 100 companies have been linked to 71% of industrial greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. Their labor was being abused for the sole purpose of benefitting the Autobots sole enemy the Quintessons. The miners, exploited for labor and denied their right to transform, live in powerlessness until they learn the truth: that they were born to be Transformers, capable of much more than their oppressed existence.

Just as the miners were alienated from their true potential, many communities around the world are marginalized by unsustainable practices. Environmental degradation disproportionately affects poorer communities and developing nations, like the Congo and Ghana, where resources are extracted, but the benefits never reach the local populations.
